Understanding why people acted as they did isn’t the same as excusing what they fought for.

The legal question of secession wasn’t as black-and-white in 1861 as it seems in hindsight.

Before the war, many constitutional scholars argued both sides of that issue.

Loyalty was genuinely torn, between a federal union still defining itself and the sovereignty of the states that created it.

Lee and others saw their primary allegiance as to Virginia or their home state, because that’s how the concept of federalism was commonly understood at the time.

You can say they were wrong, but it doesn’t follow that they were dishonorable.

They fought for a mistaken cause, but often with sincere conviction and a sense of duty.
