It appears there is still demand for dial-up service:

RE: Phone Line Upgrades

You may already be aware of the busy signals occurring on Velocity.Net
during peak usage hours. You may also know that GTE, the local phone
company, has been waiting for the delivery of a new telephone switch
before they can honor our outstanding modem line orders.

Yesterday, GTE informed us that the switch installation is on schedule.
That means our order for 768 new phone lines is on its way. This will
return us to our previous 4 to 1 user to modem ratio (4:1). Then, we will
once again be providing the best user to modem ratio in the industry (the
current industry average is 10:1 or HIGHER).

The only remaining issue is that GTE needs to complete the installation
and testing of the phone switch before our lines can be activated. GTE's
estimated time to finalize this process is 2 to 4 weeks.

Please note that we currently have two different dial-in modem numbers,
836-0049 and 836-1621. If any additional numbers are added when the new
lines arrive, we will send each Velocity.Net member an email message and
we will post the number(s) on our web site.

As you can see, the elimination of busy signals is STILL, and will always
be, one of our highest priorities here at Velocity.Net.
