I retired in the late 70's so much may have change in procurement. However, if you look at our airports I've heard about them upgrading the equipment controllers work on for perhaps a couple decades and they're still using antiquated equipment.

It may be easier to get small equipment, but large procurements still are very complex.

I really like the billionaire who's developing weapons with no seed money and then offers them for sale. Meanwhile most defense contractors get paid a fortune for weapon development on equipment that never comes to fruition, or if it does the price is a sizable multiple to the initial estimate.

Frankly Musk has done amazing things that NASA would have never even attempted. I suspect that if he developed passenger aircraft they'd have a fraction of the parts, be far more efficient, comfortable and reliable.

I'd also bet if Musk took on repaving a machine would be developed that chewed up the highway in front and spit out pavement that would last half a century or longer instead of the little bit they take from the top and have to redo it every 3 to 5 years. The expression that we never have the time to do it right, we always have the time to do it over applies well here.
