Indentured servants were a little different, having an end date to their servitude. Which is how a lot of Appalachia got settled. An indentured servant was going to cost if they completed their contract. So, especially if you also had slaves, guess who got picked for the most dangerous jobs? Skipping the balance of your contract and heading for the hills was a survival strategy.
