Look's like your $300.00 people computer will be here real soon!! National Semi Sees $300 Computers Coming To Mkt In '98

SAN FRANCISCO (Dow Jones)--National Semiconductor Corp. (NSM) said the desktop computer market could begin to see $300 machines by the end of the year, according to BancAmerica Robertson Stephens analyst Arun Veerappan.
National Semiconductor Chief Executive Brian L. Halla gave the pricing outlook Tuesday at a technology conference sponsored by the securities firm.
Veerappan said that while $300 computers may begin to make it onto retail shelves this year, this low-price category won't be large enough to be a key opportunity for the company this year.
The real opportunity for National Semiconductor will be the broader sub-$1,000 market for computers, a fast-growing market in which the company is a participant, he said.
Computers selling at $300 could be a more important factor come 1999 and 2000, Veerappan said.
