Ramming Jihad on the Île d’Oléron

Posted on November 5, 2025 by Baron Bodissey

The Île d’Oléron is an island just off the west coast of France, near the Gironde (Bordeaux) estuary. A bridge connects it to the mainland.

Early this morning, the emergency services on the Île d’Oléron were alerted to a series of accidents involving a vehicle and several passersby, including pedestrians and cyclists. According to Sud Ouest, a man driving a car left the road and deliberately struck five people, then set his vehicle on fire and shouted “Allahu Akbar” before being apprehended. He is being investigated for attempted murder.

See also this English-language article, which says, “The case is not being treated as a terrorist investigation.”

Gary Fouse has translated part of an article about the incident, and includes these miscellaneous notes:

The driver is identified as Jean Guillot, 35, apparently native French and with a history of mental instability, drugs and alcohol. He ran down about ten people on foot or on bikes.

A headline at François de Souche makes references to his being self-radicalized on the Internet and turning to religion.

A Sud Ouest report says he grew up in Mayac, 25 km from Perigueux, and is described as “unstable” by those close to him. He said on social media that he wanted to “baptize himself”. He lives in a mobile home.

According to France Bleu, the suspect had to be tasered by police.

According to Le Figaro, the suspect was not known by anti-terror intelligence services for radicalization. The national anti-terrorism prosecutor’s office is following developments. Aside from the “Allahu Akhbar”, they are investigating other leads to determine if this was Islam-related. Authorities urge “prudence”.

Le Figaro reports that the suspect told police he had recently discovered Islam and that Allah had entrusted him with a mission.

I have translated the beginning of the article, but there is a partial subscriber block. The important details are in the headline.

Oléron: In custody, the attacker stated that he had recently discovered Islam and that Allah had entrusted him with a mission

Info Le Figaro — Arrested after his deadly journey using his car as a battering ram, which resulted in five injured, the suspect explained that he had been searching for spiritual answers.

More than ten years ago, far from l’île d’Oléron, the spokesman for Daesh (ISIS) issued a call that sadly became famous: “Isolate the American infidel, the French infidel, or any of their allies […] run them down with your car.” And one thing is already certain: Whatever his motivations are, terrorist, psychiatric, or relevant to the common law category of “Islamist-inspired crimes and offenses”, this call was followed to the letter on Wednesday morning by the perpetrator of the deadly rampage on this Atlantic island, more known for its ocean splendors than for jihadist connections. A premeditated attack perpetrated by a determined man.

The facts, described by Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez, who went to the scene, are terrifying. On Wednesday morning, Jean G., born in 1990 and of French nationality, left his residence, a mobile home located in La Cotinière, on the western coast of the island… [subscriber block]
