Grokimedia content is copied from Wikipedia. AFAIK, Wikipedia is open source, which means anyone can copy it for whatever reason. It might be a reasonable way to start a competitor. In the same sense if I were going to make something that is structuraily similar to any open source software, I might start by knocking-off the source code (legally) then making the necessary changes to my own copy.
However, in the case of Grokipedia, I do not think this is how it was done, generally. The difference between Wikipedia (W) and Grokipedia (G) that G is an AI-powered derivative work that leverages W's vast knowledge base to create its own content, but with a different underlying philosophy and operational model, i.e., G seeks to be truth based, while W has been found to have certain topic where there are battles over what the truth is, rather than a sort of "quest" for the facts.
At the same time, it makes sense to begin with what is out there then use AI to correct it, to the extent possible.
We'll have to wait and see which is better. My guess is that Dems will stick with Wikipedia because they mostly don't know the difference, while the more intelligent, truth-seeking individuals will at least try G and see how it looks. I seldom have relied on W, certainly in recent times, and I doubt I'll go back. |
