Apple's good enough brand was the 16e. It's the Air (and Samsung Edge) that is being discontinued.

I suspect low sales are all due to the fragile nature of a thin phone. Two thin foldable parts likely do make it more durable and lasting but then it's the cost of buying 2 phones as one.

Even fashionistas want something than will last (battery and untwisted screen).
