Au contraire, mercury is STILL used to recover gold. Yes, even today! Furthermore, me and others like me DON'T evaporate it, but precipitate it and use it again and again and again. Especially since so much of our placer gold is trapped by mercury left behind by the Chinese in the Great Northwest in our tributaries, streams and rivers.

That is why I had to find out, and no, I don't "retort" it either. What I and others do isn't nearly as "dangerous" or environmentally damaging. Besides, when I find mercury in my pan/sluice, I grin real big, because that stuff has been collecting gold for me for nearly 50 years out here in some cases, and all I have to do is "catch the catcher."
