| | | Samsung Display and TSK Corporation jointly develop blue OLED materials based on iron catalyst technology
From my point of view:...
Recent news of Samsung’s collaboration with TSK Corporation clearly suggests a strategic move, not merely an industrial one, on Samsung’s part. While the joint development of new OLED materials, particularly blue emitters, is promising, TSK currently lacks the large-scale manufacturing capacity needed to replace Universal Display Corporation (UDC) and its partner PPG. In contrast, UDC and PPG operate multiple well-established, high-volume production facilities in the US and Ireland, with decades of proven reliability and recent capacity expansions.
The timing and visibility of Samsung’s alliance with TSK closely align with ongoing negotiations for the next long-term supply and licensing agreement with UDC. Historically, Samsung has used external alliances and public R&D announcements to reduce suppliers’ bargaining power, put downward pressure on prices, and delay contractual commitments. The nature of TSK’s announcement, focused on development rather than production, suggests it is being used as a bargaining chip rather than as an immediate alternative source of materials. |
