Four years ago, we first heard the term 'atmospheric river', as large areas of southern BC were ravaged by extreme rainfall. Most of the damage has been repaired by now, but there are still spots that need more work, and some places have had to be abandoned.

There is not a lot you can do when that much rain enters narrow river valleys like along the Coquihalla Highway and the Nicola Valley, but the flood defences for the Abbotsforf Prairie, where a once drained lake reappeared, have been strengthened. However, there is still one overriding danger remaining. Most of the water that drowned the Prairie came across the US border from the Nooksack River, and the US has done absolutely nothing to mitigate that risk. Thanks, Washington state!
