SpaceX's new Starship Super Heavy booster explodes in Texas testing

  • SpaceX's Starship Super Heavy V3 booster exploded during gas system pressure testing in South Texas. No propellant or engines were on board, and no injuries occurred.
  • The V3 booster is 232 ft tall, part of the fully stacked Starship at 403 ft, designed for orbital docking, lunar missions, and Mars travel. NASA plans to use it as a lunar lander for Artemis 3, now targeted for 2028.
  • There have been 11 Starship/Super Heavy tests since April 2023. Recovery methods include splashdowns in the Gulf of Mexico; SpaceX aims for full reusability next year, catching both booster and ship while delivering 100+ tons to orbit.
