CJ, Part of the reason why doctors in the US make so much is their cost of malpractice insurance. Especially for people like surgeons. Which would not be a rfactor with universal healthcare. Uh, wouldn't malpractice be a reason why doctors who aren't in private practice make LESS than they should?
The only reason why doctors, especially specialists and surgeons, make so much is because of limited supply. High standards for med school admissions, combined with crazy-ass tuition (both undergrad and grad), combined with more and more bureaucracy in health care, are all working together to discourage more people from becoming doctors.
We could try and import more doctors through H-1B visas, but who the f is going to pay $100K/visa these days? Even if that fee went away, public sentiment toward H-1B visas are turning negative, so I don't expect much relief here.
Universal health care isn't a panacea. It might solve some problems, but it will exacerbate others.

P.S. - Funny thing about universal health care is that, when ObamaCare was first being introduced, I said that universal health care is all but inevitable. Now that MAGA is starting to embrace ObamaCare, my prediction is coming to fruition. |
