A big chunk of the monetary damages in malpractice suits is ongoing, often lifelong, medical care. Which is why insurance for pediatricians is so high. Many states have instituted tort reform, I remember Abbott ironically championed it in Texas, which limits rewards for things like pain and suffering. He became a millionaire because of his accident, so why not pull up the ladder? For medical, that often has a really high barrier to get a significant award. So it isn't a factor like it used to be.

In principle, the AMA is supposed to flush out bad docs, but much like the Catholic church, they often move the bad docs to other states and hope he or she doesn't screw up again.
