Those who voted Liberal and Ndp voted for this shit. It happens every year thanks to you idiots. You are responsible for all this waste of our money.

We caught government bureaucrats burning through your tax dollars at year-end so they can demand even more money from you next year.

The government’s fiscal year ends on March 31. Government bureaucrats spent $1.5 billion on office equipment and machinery during the last 10 days of its budget year. Bureaucrats even spent tens of thousands showering themselves with awards.

We also caught the Eby government spending tens of thousands of dollars on three soccer balls.

But it’s not all bad news in this week’s Taxpayer Waste Watch. The Canadian Taxpayers Federation teamed up with an Indigenous activist to push for greater government transparency for First Nations band members. And we won the court fight!

Enjoy.

Inside Ottawa’s 10-day, $1.5 billion year-end spending spree

Would you rather pay for a brand-new hospital or federal bureaucrats’ 10-day March madness spending spree?

Well, the federal government burned through $1.5 billion on office supplies and equipment in a mad dash to burn through your cash during the last 10 days of its 2024-25 budget year.

Federal departments and agencies spent $382 million on supplies and $1.1 billion on machinery and equipment between March 22 and March 31, 2025.

This is a well-known phenomenon inside the Ottawa bubble usually referred to as March Madness. Government bureaucrats look for ways to burn through your tax dollars at the end of each year so they can keep demanding more money for their budgets the next year.

Here are some of the ways bureaucrats burned through your money:

The Canada Revenue Agency spent nearly $50,000 on “long service awards” for its employees.

Here’s a crazy idea: Maybe the CRA should figure out how to pick up a phone before it spends tens of thousands of dollars showering its bureaucrats with awards.

The Department of Canadian Heritage spent more than $12,000 on “non- monetary awards.”

Office furniture was one of the most frequent items on the feds’ expense sheets.

National Defence burned through $205,000 on office furniture during that 10-day span. The Department of Immigration spent more than $152,000 on furniture, while the Privy Council Office dropped $60,000 on furniture during those 10 days in March. Global Affairs Canada spent $128,500 on “household appliances” and $4,220 on artwork.

VIA Rail spent $1.5 million on new Apple iPhones for its staff. The Department of Justice and the Treasury Board spent $2.8 million and $1.4 million, respectively, on computer equipment.

The $1.5 billion spending spree is just what we know of. Multiple government agencies and Crown corporations refused to submit any expense information.

B.C. drops $190,000 on three wood-leather soccer balls

British Columbia Premier David Eby wasted tens of thousands of dollars on three “wood-leather soccer balls,” according to records obtained by the Canadian Taxpayers Federation.

Eby promoted the soccer balls at the Osaka Expo in June – while every other premier was attending a first ministers’ meeting in Saskatoon.

B.C.’s Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport spent $55,000 to produce the wood-leather balls. The Ministry of Forests spent another $134,000 on the wood-leather project overall, according to the records.

Eby conceded the prototype “won’t be used in any FIFA matches soon.”

You’re paying for 950,000 more government employees

Canadian governments added 950,000 employees between 2015 and 2024, according to a new report from the Fraser Institute. That accounts for a third of all Canadian job growth since 2015.

Let that sink in for a moment.

Canadian governments added 950,000 extra employees in 10 years.

A THIRD of Canada's new jobs has been funded by taking more money from taxpayers like you.

Government administration has grown even faster than overall government employment since 2015.

There were 328,200 more government administration bureaucrats in 2024 than there were in 2015.

“Employment growth in Canada has been inflated by growth in government employment, a trend that cannot continue if Canadians are to maintain their standard of living,” wrote the Fraser Institute.
VIDEO: Indigenous activist wins landmark court ruling for financial transparency

Indigenous activist Hans McCarthy partnered with the CTF to launch a court application against the federal government to compel Ottawa to release band council resolutions regarding Frog Lake First Nation’s trust fund.

The trust fund totaled about $102 million in 2013. Less than $9 million remained by 2024.

The Federal Court ordered Ottawa to provide the full documents to McCarthy within 30 days.

The victory in this court case sets a clear precedent: Band members have a right to know how their community’s money is being used.

CTF’s in-house lawyer Devin Drover and Prairie Director Gage Haubrich join McCarthy to break down the court victory and explain how other Indigenous activists can use it to fight for transparency in their own communities.
