Syria is undergoing a similar cleansing operation as the US undertook in Iraq post-invasion with de-Baathification, removing all constituencies loyal to the previous government, Unfortunately, the Sunnis became useful to the US to stoke a civil war to weaken the Shiite government that followed and later to overthrow the Syrian government in an effort to break up the so-called Shiite crescent 'threatening' to Israel.
