TRUE...BUT usually not a company policy and more on a store level trying to reduce shrink. Any company condoning that as policy would be out of their minds. Bad publicity on food handling and sanitation can kill a store. I was involved with a 139 store chain that had their own sanitarians. They would come in unannounced and inspect the store dept by dept for an entire day. Emphasis was on depts like deli and meat that handled food directly. Dry goods were more date checking for expirations and looking for bug and rodent issues. These guys were much tougher than the board of health as the chain never wanted to be on that published SHIT LIST.
