Algoma Steel has issued 1,000 layoff notices to workers at its Sault Ste. Marie plant, effective March 23, 2026. The company attributes this difficult decision to the financial strain from U.S. tariffs and an accelerated transition to electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmaking.
