I think this is the year that Caere will produce significant increases in sales and earnings. Software UNIT volumes have increased to "3.2 million in 1997 from 2.1 million units in 1996 and 1.3 million in 1995. Revenue over the past 2 years has been flat because of their "bundle and upgrade" business model. If the utilization of scanners continues to increase in both home and business use this strategy will position Caere as a main beneficiary.
Many of the popular computer magazines have recently included articles and evaluations of scanners and OCR software. Although I have not found a critical need for this technology, I am now considering a purchase. I'm wondering how much of a market there is for a product that does not seem to be a necessity for many computer owners? What percentage of the market will feel the need to upgrade? I think the answer depends a lot on the ease of use and the accuracy of the software. Would like to hear comments from those that have used the software.
