Maybe those old timers are factoring in the wind chill factor when getting their 60-below number.
I doubt it. I think they just liked to act like they were tough, rough and ready. And generally they were.

The settlement of AK was probably a feat in mankind. I have read some anthropology, had a class in it as an elective. I read a piece from a well known out doorsman, and generally an environmentalist. He spent a winter in Eagle. After doing that he noted how remarkable it was for humans to inhabit AK.

One common thought is they came over from Asia, land bridge days. They made it, and immediately headed south, to the tip of SA. In the relative sense, in a short period of time. And maybe that is how NA and SA were settled by humans.

In the more recent old days in Ak, cabins were very small, took only a minimal number of cords of wood to heat over the course of the winter. No indoor plumbing to freeze up, no indoor hot water. If you wanted hot water, you heated in a kettle on the wood stove. Then we all got extravagant. If you have a 3000 plus square home today, even if decently insulated, gonna take you 10 cords plus, or maybe 2000 gallons of diesel, plus. If you home is larger and poorly insulated think 5000 gallons of diesel.

Solar works great for about 8 months of the year, but aw the winter.

Just yakking here.

I was young and tough once. Used to go out in the extreme with a ball cap, let my ears get red as a beat.

I am no longer in that state of mind, was stupid.

aj, I have a bucket list. Having medical issues, but if I get thru them, gotta lot of AK travels to do, to the villages, Aleutians, plus some fly fishing lakes.

Ordering one to these today. I have various hats including the old standby stocking caps. I like having a bill. A thin but useful balaclava does wonders as well, and could fit under this cap.

Your head is fed with lots of blood normally, easier to keep warm? For me the feet and the hands are always the most difficult. I got a new set of boots from Amazon last year, they work great. But the hands, I've tried battery powered gloves ... they need more improvement.
