Well... you were certainly old enough to recall the days when we just had bowl games and no national championship game. It was always controversial who was selected to be #1 in the US based on the polls. If you lost even one game you were pretty much toast.

So we went to four teams. Then it became controversial which four teams made it.

So we now have 12 teams. And now we are debating not just who is in it (e.g. JMU, Notre Dame, Miami, and/or BYU), but also where to rank teams in general (e.g. Alabama and Ohio State), let alone who gets byes. And if a team with two or more losses wins it all, even more controversy!
