The Swiss certainly are good with branding: Swiss Watch, Swiss Cheese, Swiss Chocolate, Swiss Army Knife, etc. My first Swiss watch was a Lucerne stop watch I bought in the 70s and still have and it still works great. But then I got into Casio watches as I could better keep track of my singular and cumulative lap times. After that it was dive watches. Utility over aesthetics and craftsmanship.

When my son was in the market to buy his "nice watch", we were amazed at how many knockoffs there are out there. I think now that everyone carries a smart phone, watches are no longer the necessity they once were. Of course, the people who once wore watches out of necessity are not the ones who buy the nice watches!
