Jim -- The ongoing discussions on whether QCOM should vertically integrate are interesting, but lack certain cultural/substantive factors that may be important..

QCOM has always succeeded best by maintaining a cutting edge lead on wireless related technologies. Qualcomm is not a provider of finished products, though many years ago it marketed a "thin phone" in order to get more public acceptance of its superior CDMA technology. I believe Kyocera was the actual manufacturer of the phone bearing the Qualcomm name.

The new AI chips are an example of how Qualcomm leans on its reputation for efficient power management and better all around performance – available to whichever OEM wants those features.

Qualcomm's leadership is tied not only to technology prowess but to an enviable diversity of inputs, including not only diversity in its employee backgrounds but strategic acquisitions of small firms that have some useful new technologies to enhance what Qualcomm has previously developed in house. Of course, diversity these days is a quality frowned on by some political leaders, so the benefits of diversity may not show up immediately.

I wouldn't bank on any other approach.
