there is no shortage of rare earths , there is a shortage of domestic mines and especially processing plants.
By the time most of these processing plants come on line . The chinese will probably make nice and lower prices forcing the processing plants into bankruptcy unless they get subsidized. Then we will see deja vu all over again.

My own recent encounter with Affordability. I got a flyer from my HVAC company offering big discount rebates tax credit if I purchased a new HVAC system by end of year. To sum up , the unit that I purchased 8 years ago for $9500 after all the discount and incentives was now being offered up for over $17000. The HVAC guy also noted that there were more system break downs in the past so there also offering a 10 year labor and parts warranty. so I am now being offered a system not a good as it was 8 years ago for twice the price!
He also told me that as soon as the tariff announcement was made prices on hvac systems all went up by $3k right away. All this was very surprising to me considering how bad the housing market is supposed to be but I guess the HVAC guys are doing ok. I am hopeful to get another 5 years out of my HVAC unit so I passed on the deal
