SBU’s “Spiderweb” Operation: The Boldest Strike of Modern Warfare
International media have hailed Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) for carrying out what they describe as the boldest covert operation of modern warfare. Codenamed “Spiderweb”, the mission dealt a devastating blow to Russia’s strategic aviation fleet.

According to reports, the SBU successfully targeted 41 Russian strategic aircraft, including long-range bombers, using innovative FPV drones of its own design. Each drone was equipped with a specialized explosive charge capable of penetrating aircraft fuselages and detonating inside.

The operation was meticulously prepared over 18 months under the leadership of SBU chief Vasyl Maliuk. A Ukrainian couple recruited inside Russia played a crucial role in logistics and execution.

Coordinated Launch from four trucks, 117 drones were simultaneously launched. Operators in Kyiv controlled them remotely via secure communications, guiding the drones to their targets with precision.

The strike inflicted losses estimated at over $7 billion, crippling Russia’s ability to conduct long-range bombing missions and undermining the prestige of its strategic air force.

Global outlets, including The Wall Street Journal, praised the mission as a landmark in modern military innovation. Analysts note that the operation demonstrates Ukraine’s ability to leverage technology and ingenuity against a larger adversary.
