There is a cost factor in the actions of Apple. When Apple's current contract and royalty license comes up for renewal, a good portion of Qualcomm's patents that covered Apple's early 2020 modems will have expired.

If Apple can get away from Qualcomm modems by time of contract expiry they will be able to have a 2020+ era modem without being endeared to Qualcomm. That was the game.

The issue now becomes has Qualcomm et al moved modems, AI on-device, edge and distributed computing far enough along so that folks like Apple will still need their patented innovations.

That's the thrust of it all, always was and always will be.

ps Apple was also likely looking to patent stuff themselves to enhance their own value in negotiations. It's a two street for all.
