Yes, going the patent expiry route Apple would be stuck with basic 4G/LTE prior to CA (3GPP Release 9). 5G NR (2036 patent expiry) would seem like basic house stakes for any phone being allowed upon today's 5G networks.

I guess we'll either see Apple in court again or they'll be paying royalties for decades to come. Let's just hope whoever replaces Cook is much less of a perfidious soul. My bad.
