Luminar Technologies jumps after Rivian talks up LiDAR potential at its Autonomy and AI Day event

Luminar Technologies ( LAZR) shot up in Thursday afternoon trading after the company was mentioned at Rivian Automotive's ( RIVN) Autonomy and AI Day.

Rivian Automotive ( RIVN) said it plans to integrate LiDAR into future R2 models. The electric vehicle maker said LiDAR will augment the company’s multi-modal sensor strategy, providing detailed, three-dimensional spatial data and redundant sensing, and improving real-time detection for the edge cases of driving.

In addition, Rivian Automotive ( RIVN) highlighted that its Gen 3 autonomy hardware, including ACM3 and LiDAR, is currently undergoing validation and is expected to start shipping on R2 models starting at the end of 2026.
