DB: You brought up three good points.
1) About competition: The table that was part of the article listed the diseases that the big four were developing vaccines for. I am sure that the list is not all inclusive. But you will note that they overlap on only some of the diseases. This also applies if you add my list of NVX's activities. NVX will have competition with their DTaP line in the begining but it should wane overtime. When they start bringing out their combination vaccines like DTaP-IPV and DTaP-IPV-Hib they just may be alone. Their meningitis efforts are partially co-partnered with Connaught otherwise they have the jump in that area.
NVX's "neonatal strep"( GBS) and " strep throat" (Group A) efforts are leading the industry. It appears that NVX will have plenty of competition for the " middle ear infection " business but that remains to be seen as to who has the better product. I need to look into this abit more.
2) about a buyout: First, Yes, in-house development does"obviate the need" somewhat and thus NVX will not be as attractive to say a SKB as it would to a Connaught or an Abbott, depending on their interest. Abbott who is literally hurting for more product flow to support their commitment to the infant healthcare business and having dropped completely out of the vaccine business a few years ago, well it does make a lot of sense.
I actually think NVX is an attractive buyout to all of these drug companies. With the acception of DTaP their is little overlap and frankly NVX's DTaP is a more promising vaccine than any of the other DTaP vaccines now on the market. SKB's present DTaP has a very real "safety" problem. It will never be approved for the 5th shot and shouldn't have been for the 4th.( here i say "ask the Swedes").
Now here is something that i haven't said before but I have every reason to believe to be the case. Out there in this highly competitive DTaP arena is a gentlemen who has under "big guy" sponsorship, done extensive clinical studies on the multicomponent vaccines. If you get him out of his "environment" he will tell you that the "monocomponent" vaccine will win the war.
YES, NVX IS VERY MUCH A CANDIDATE TO BE BOUGHT OUT.
3) about bioengineering: You are right , this is a competing technology. I think it was neccesitated by the need to get around NVX's patent on certain conjugate technology. Do you recall the law suit back in the early 90's. This is what it was about. I am doing some homework to better understand this so I may have more to say later. .
For all I know NVX mite have the lead in the " middle ear infection" vaccine also.
I have heard those a lot closer to NVX then i am say that the "Strep" activity alone supports a buyout at todays price and then some.
It is significant in my mind that NVX has not entered into any agreements on development or marketing of that product. Now don't believe for a minute that they haven't had the opportunity.
WOW! Why doesn't NVX management speak up on all this good stuff?
Here is one good reason; the competition would love to know a lot more about them, and I'll add, and the "shorts " use the competition as one source for information on NVX and you know how they have ready access to the media to present a distorted image.
For now we wait for FDA approval for CERTIVA, the SAFEST and PUREST DTaP vaccine. What follows is fantastic and makes it all worthwhile. :-}
