IOS 26 code reveals new information about the rumored Apple Home Hub — here’s what we know

Story by Josh Render21h

Apple’s iOS 26 could have given us some new details on the company’s long-rumored, but elusive, smart home hub.

Apple’s entry into the smart home market has been stated to be happening since 2022, and yet, there’s still a lot we don’t know about Apple’s smart home ambitions. However, a recent report from Macworld claims to have found mention of a device with the code number J490 within an internal build of iOS 26. While the code doesn’t mention the Apple smart home hub by name, that specific number has been associated with the rumored device in the past.

Macworld then goes on to state that Apple’s smart home hub will make use of Apple’s A18 chip — previously seen in the iPhone 16 series — and feature a 1080p camera. We’ve also heard in the past that the device will feature a 7-inch iPad-like display, as well as offer a speaker system akin to Apple's existing HomePod 2.

On top of allowing the smart home hub to take in your interior decor, the camera also reportedly allows the use of Apple’s Face ID feature. It appears that the smart home hub could use the feature to identify who is in front of it, enabling it to switch user profiles depending on who is interacting with it. Finally, Apple's rumored hub will reportedly offer Apple Intelligence support, mainly in the form of the new version of Siri.

Apple could also be working on a new home security feature

On top of the Apple smart home hub, the iOS 26 code also mentions another device with the code number J229. This is reportedly a “never-before-seen” accessory that features sensors that allow it to capture images while also detecting the sounds of alarms. While we can’t be certain what this device is, the hardware setup could match other rumors regarding Apple working on a possible security camera or smart doorbell.

The current consensus for a release date is that Apple has delayed the launch until 2026, which is when the improved Siri is expected to be released. However, we have seen so many delays and reports of possible release dates that, at this point, the only thing we can do is wait.

Apple is always tight-lipped about its upcoming hardware, so we’re not likely to see anything concrete until the company is ready to put it on sale. Until then, let us know if you’re looking forward to an Apple smart hub and what other features you would like to see from it.
