A new discovery at Easter Island could rewrite history as we know it
  • Radiocarbon dating of one Rongorongo tablet suggests it predates European arrival (1493–1509), hinting that the Rapa Nui may have invented writing independently.
  • Rapa Nui, settled between 1150–1280 CE, remained isolated until 1722, making Rongorongo a potentially rare example of a homegrown writing system.
  • Findings are based on one tablet, and dating reflects when the wood was cut, not inscribed; other tablets are scattered globally, requiring further study.
    • However, the date only reflects when the wood was felled, and sample size of one isn’t large enough to be entirely certain.
  • While Europeans eventually discovered the impressive moai statues for which the Rapa Nui are best known, they also stumbled upon a yet-undeciphered script known as Rongorongo—a three-dimensional writing system that uses pictorial signs known as glyphs.
