Waymo is carrying 2 million paying passengers each month, and growing at a fast pace. Tesla has never carried a paying passenger autonomously, after a decade of trying. FSD is a lot like Tesla Solar Tile Roofs - an interesting idea that unfortunately just didn't work out.
Image only vs. image PLUS distance sensors (radar and lidar) put an orders of magnitude greater load on the systems software and CPU.
When a Waymo detects a curb, person, or other object, it sees the object and the distance. When a Tesla detects a curb, person, or other object, it sees the object. Is it a nearby small dog or is it a far away large dog? What's the context? What's the relationship with other objects? Is there some clue as to what size other things are that are adjacent to it? Is there a risk of an optical illusion? What about light reflections? Waymo doesn't just have lidar -- it also has radar that isn't affected by rain, snow, sun glare, etc.
The relative speed at which a radar/lidar/camera system can learn about the world is gigantically different. And it shows.
When do you expect Tesla to start piloting a driverless service? They've been saying "very close" and PROMISING "next year" since 2019...
