multi project wafers have been the norm for at least 50 years. use it if you just want test chips, since a wafer run will only get you 50-100 chips. but it is worth testing if you got a viable product, or when the complexity and newness is so differnt that you need to get silicon to run test cases and performance testing. sometimes you have a new processor and you need to bring up a complete Sw system. did it on an AI processor around 2014 or so.
