“We want peace”. The Kremlin rejected the idea of a Christmas truce in Ukraine
The Kremlin commented on the proposal for a Christmas truce in Ukraine, stating that Russia is not interested in a temporary suspension of hostilities. This was announced by Putin's press secretary, Dmitry Peskov, in response to a question from journalists about Moscow's possible agreement to the initiative of Kyiv and European countries.
“We want peace. We don't want a truce to give Ukraine a respite and prepare for the continuation of the war,” - said Peskov, his words are quoted by "Interfax".
According to him, if in Kyiv "the desire to substitute a deal with momentary unviable decisions prevails", then Moscow "is unlikely to be ready to participate in this".
Earlier, Peskov already criticized the idea of a truce, calling it "brainwashing", and stated that Russia needs a "guaranteed, long-term and understandable peace for everyone".
The proposal to declare a Christmas truce on the night of December 25 was made on Monday, December 15, by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz at a joint press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Merz called on Russia to declare a truce on Catholic Christmas, noting that "the ball is in Russia's court".
Volodymyr Zelensky supported the initiative, stating at the same time that the United States insists on the speedy achievement of peace, and for Ukraine, according to him, its quality is important.
