Talking about teaching, I'm reminded about an incident at one of the classes I was teaching in graduate school... I was giving a major exam and about one hour through the exam I interrupted the class to make an announcement... I didn't see anyone cheating but my announcement went something like this: Please excuse this interruption, but I see one of you cheating... we all know that cheating on an exam is grounds for expulsion from the university... I will be in my office tomorrow at noon for only about 15 minutes, I want the cheater to show up at my office and promise it will never happen again... If that student comes to my office and makes that promise, then I will forgive them this time and let it go, otherwise I will file for expulsion for the cheater... This is a one time offer, please show up at my office tomorrow at noon and we can forget this ever happened... Again, my apologies for this interruption, and now please resume the exam... I didn't really see anyone cheating but I thought it would be an interesting experiment... I went to my office the next day and at noon there were 8 students out of 36 in the class who showed up ready to apologize for cheating... I told each one privately that I don't expect this to happen ever again and they promised it would never happen... That was some experiment!!! GZ
