Stone tools discovered on Crete and other Greek islands suggest that ancient humans deliberately crossed open seas more than 130,000 years ago. The tools resemble Acheulean and Mousterian industries commonly associated with Neanderthals, indicating purposeful seafaring long before modern humans are known to have reached the region.
