It's doubtful that alone would've stopped the war. Zelensky had bragged before the war that Ukraine was already a de facto NATO member. It was meant to imply that NATO would come to its defense as with de jure membership, but it was also backed by joint military activities with NATO and the military facilities that NATO was building in Ukraine.
