There is no such thing as an unbiased statistics as there is not such thing as an unbiased news reporting (which if could be done, it would be useless anyway).

What you want to do is to first decide what is the right feature set/bias that you are looking for. Critique your own thinking, then see if the statistics confirm your thinking when by looking for counter arguments (not pro arguments).

Margin debt to market cap makes sense because as the size of the stock market grows, so does the amount of leverage. Hypothetically, if the entirety of the stock market was one giant ETF and that was all that you could trade, then as the price of that ETF increases, so does the margin requirement. So the the other metrics are like what AJTJ aptly illustrated.
