Hi Mirage,

'The casting had a date of 1965?

396's became 402 in 70, but they retained the name of 396.

The heads were not on the engine. I'm sure they would not have had the rectangle hi perfmance heads.

The vette engine had a rating of 425 hp.

The next year (1966) when they were offered in Chevelles and Camaros, because the politically correct king of the hill 427 covette was offered with 424 the same 396 was downgraded to 375 hp. It had the same cam and heads and compression ratio of 11 to 1.

The insurance companies did not ewant to insure over 400 horse so it got a downgrade.

I have two of them now AND THEY ARE STRONG RUNNERS..

Back then there was not a wide enough tire to harness the very strong power.

Those were the days!

Bob
