This is gonna be contrarian here but I don't get why the left is ALWAYS against new tech. Let the RW be paranoid and anti-science/technology. Since I graduated middle school in 1967, off the top of my head we've had protests around Berkeley against school ID's, for-and-against abortion (a conspiracy to kill black "babies), cellular phones generally; and more recently 5G, PG&E Smart Meters -- all going to kill us with cancer because of EMF's. Hydro-powered electricity. Modern medicine vs. supplements and homeopathy, even astrology for cures. Recently it's about cameras for crimes and tracking bad players (another evil government plot) while police chases result in the death of innocent bystanders. RFK Jr. took some of my leftie friends because he tapped into the fears and conspiracy bents. We can let China control AI and receive all the economic and technological benefits. We need better government to REGULATE not eliminate AI. Like what has been missing with big-tech data-mining and sales. As with all research there should be wise evidence-based oversight. Yes it will be, like all technology, used for good and evil. If left in the hands of only a few oligarchs, the most evil. Worst case is good AI robots vs. evil AI robots. If we get our Democracy back, we can handle this. I might change my mind if an evil "sentient" robot is unleashed. A modern monster vs. humanity meme. My bet is still on humanity though there are lot of low-information vulnerable people to overcome.
