Eudaimonia is an ancient Greek term that describes a state of human flourishing—living well, developing one’s character, and fulfilling one’s highest potential. Although it is often translated as “happiness,” it refers to a deeper and more enduring form of well-being than momentary pleasure. In classical thought, eudaimonia is achieved by living a life guided by virtue, purpose, and reason. It is considered the highest human good. Its core elements include cultivating strong character, acting in alignment with one’s values, and continually striving for excellence.
