Standing stones at the Ring of Brodgar, ScotlandArranged in an almost perfect circle on a narrow slip of land between two lochs, these tall stones stand as silent witness to roughly 4,000 years of history. The Ring of Brodgar is an impressive sight here on Mainland, the largest island in the Orkneys chain. Archaeologists aren't certain how or why these stones were placed, but we know there was an ancient and thriving settlement in the area. The Ring of Brodgar is just one of a number of sites known as the Heart of Neolithic Orkney, a rich array of monuments including Skara Brae, the most complete Neolithic village in Northern Europe.
