The above is written from memory, probably paraphrased. I think it’s a good idea to read the linked Noah Smith article - because we’re in a similar situation. What’s masking the truth is that our government drops into the economy a trillion or two every year. “Free money”. A huge annual “subsidy” - which enters the economy through a variety of government programs.

It won’t last forever. And, also, protectionist policies (including tariffs) may buy us time - but in the end, we have to build, invent, develop new, more effective products and technologies. Revolutionize the economy.
