Aerial Robotics or Drone Robotics is something I rarely talk about..

..yet my experiences at the 2025 IEEE RAS SUMMER SCHOOL ON MULTI-ROBOT SYSTEMS in Prague ???? keeps resurfacing in my mind, especially whenever the conversation turns to GNSS-denied autonomy.

GNSS-denied tech has found a lot of relevance today in not just drone tech but mobile robots, delivery systems, mapping platforms, inspection and exploration robots. I have implemented GNSS-Denied navigation on a few projects and aerial is one of the most tasking especially when done with Visual SLAM.

On this particular project, the GNSS-denied components and functions included:

1. 3D LiDAR – Ouster OS0-128 as Core GNSS-denied sensor

It Produces:
? Dense 360° 3D point clouds

Used for:
? LiDAR SLAM
? Obstacle detection
? Loop closure
? Completely independent of satellites

2. Intel RealSense D435 (Stereo Depth Camera) for Visual + depth sensing

Used for:
? Visual-Inertial Odometry (VIO)
? Visual SLAM
? Feature tracking
? Works indoors, tunnels, under bridges

3. Sony Alpha A6500 (RGB camera on gimbal) for High-resolution perception

Used for:
? Visual mapping
? Inspection
? Semantic understanding
? GNSS-agnostic

4. Garmin Rangefinder for Precise altitude / distance measurement
Critical when:
? GNSS altitude is unreliable
? Flying close to structures
? Used in sensor fusion for vertical stability

5. IMU (inside Flight Control Unit)
Measures:
? Angular velocity
? Linear acceleration
? Backbone of dead reckoning
? Drift corrected by LiDAR & vision
