BREAKING: Republican Congressman Mike Turner enrages MAGA world by pronouncing that you "can’t be America first and pro-Russia" as Trump continues fawning over Putin.
This one really struck a nerve...
"You showed the images of Putin continuing to remind us that this is a war of aggression, as Putin, you know, mercilessly pounds Kyiv and civilian homes," Turner said on ABC's "This Week."
"He's reminding us that we can’t be for this,” he continued. "You know, America, when we address the issue of whose side we’re on, you can’t be ‘America first’ and be pro-Russia. You know, Russia is a self-declared adversary of the United States. And, you know, here they are, mercilessly killing Ukrainians and trying to take Ukrainian land.”
Despite what Trump and his MAGA minions online would like us to believe, this conflict is an incredibly simple one. Russia is killing Ukrainians because Putin wants their land. There is no way to morally justify this horrific loss of life and it's encouraging to hear a Republican Congressmen speak in such straightforward terms about the conflict.
"So the president has rightly said, you know, we need to end this war," Turner continued. "But when he goes for peace, Russia wants Ukrainian land. Ukrainians have, you know, unbelievably risen to prevent Russia from taking their land. Zelensky has led them for that."
"And now, as he meets Zelensky, he's meeting a man who has led his country against Russian aggression," he went on. "So in this peace process, you know, as Russia wants Ukrainian concessions, it's going to be much more difficult, because Ukraine wants, of course, assurances that Russia is not going to come back, that the West is going to give them the assurances that they will deter Russia in the future. And that's going to be difficult, to give the type of assurances that the West is going to rise to the occasion to keep Russia from just reassembling and coming back stronger."
Turner also addressed the prospect (or lack thereof) of Russia giving any kind of meaningful concessions to make the ongoing peace talks successful. According to him, it seems unlikely.
"Remember, you know, even on Christmas, where they were asked to have a ceasefire, Russia has not agreed to any ceasefire. Russia continues to move forward. They bombed on Christmas Day. On Christmas Day. But the Ukrainians continue to repel Russian aggression."
"And the Ukrainians have been here before," Turner added. "Remember, you know, in, when the disintegration of the Soviet Union, the Ukrainians gave up nuclear weapons for their independence and for an agreement that Russia would not invade them, that they would have security assurances in the future, which Russia has then violated."
Trump can praise Putin all he wants, most Americans recognize the Russian president for the brutal, genocidal dictator he really is. The Ukrainian people deserve our support and the Kremlin deserves our full-throated condemnation. |
