Cooper & Fry

This British series is treading very familiar ground. A pair of very different detectives, each dogged by issues from their past, must solve crimes in spite of their differences., so its success lies in production values and finding ways to set the series apart. In this effort, Cooper & Fry was largely successful.

Cooper is a young, rather abrupt women who for reasons she won’t discuss has relocated from the big city to the remote rural community where the series take place. Fry is an affable local who knows everyone, and whose father, also a cop, was killed on the job in an unsolved murder. Together they tackle crimes involving local farmers, gentry, and criminals, investigations that generally unfold in a compelling manner. The twist that makes the series a little different is that they all involve some element of local folklore I should also mention the excellent production values, particularly the soundtrack.

By the end of the six episodes Fry’s issues have been largely resolved, but Copper’s haven’t, which is a shame because they are less interesting than Fry’s. That said, I will definitely check out the second season which the end of the first season forecasts is to come.
