Russian foothold collapses in key city

Russian Foothold Collapses in Key City

Ukrainian officials claimed that Russian forces have been largely pushed out of the northeastern city of Kupyansk. Ukrainian forces have cleared the remaining urban areas of Kupyansk and pushed fighting to the nearby village of Petropavlivka. According to Ukraine’s military, many of the remaining fighters were foreign mercenaries. The soldiers were reportedly cut off from ground supply routes.

Viktor Trehubov, head of communications for Ukraine’s Joint Forces, said Russian units still inside Kupyansk relied almost entirely on limited air resupply.

Trehubov said recent Ukrainian counteroffensive actions caught Russian forces off guard and disrupted efforts to stabilize defensive positions in the city’s northern districts.

Trehubov said, “They are surrendering. There have even been cases of foreigners, foreign mercenaries for the Russians, giving themselves up. Supply by air bridge alone is not something that allows them to hold out for long.”

Ukraine’s General Staff also reported that multiple Russian attacks around Kupyansk had been repelled. Ukrainian forces have continued to control Kupyansk.

Trehubov said, “At this stage, they simply do not have additional capabilities to somehow restore the situation. An entire wave of messages appeared saying that Kupyansk is gone. They themselves now admit that the defense of the city by the same units that entered and tried to secure positions in the northern districts has failed.”

Russian commanders have reportedly set a February deadline to retake the city, but Ukrainian officials said Russian troops have lost their foothold. Ukrainian forces said they also thwarted a Russian attempt to infiltrate the city through a gas pipeline.
