Why does Trump want to buy Greenland when the US can already establish as many bases and airstrips as they want there, protected by a treaty
Because Greenland is already our protectorate but we don't have total, absolute control of it. The same reason he brought previously. It is essential for protecting ourselves from higher and higher missile velocities already possessed, and getting faster, by Russia.

As I pointed out here a couple months ago, and Trump later publicly stated, we are now in the mode of protecting our hemisphere via something akin to a Monroe Doctrine, which comprehends this hemisphere as a single protected region. That doesn't mean we get involved in every squabble, but we are threatened directly or incidental to other threats against neighbors we have the right and potentially the responsibility get ourselves involved and to protect our own interests.

This is not a difficult concept to understand.
