Although 80% of those shot in center mass with a handgun will survive, the initial impact of a well designed bullet, not a solid round nose, will buy you about 1 second of time to either get cover or fire again. The impact will impart either a hydrostatic shock or a hammer effect if hitting bone. Impact to a vital organ buys you slightly more time. This is why law enforcement people continue to fire until the threat is ended.

A person with a deranged metal state or one compromised by drugs will still be in kill mode often after being shot several time. The repeated impact of multiple hits can stop this temporarily until blood loss ends the event.

If you have to fire, never assume one shot will end the fight.
