The Government Accountability Office reports the domestic heavy icebreaker program is brutal. The Polar Security Cutter program is not unlike every failed government program. The first cutter was supposed to be completed by 2024. The original signed in 2019 during Trumps first term the contract was for $746 million. Current estimates put the first ship (The Polar Sentinel) alone at $1.9 billion, with total program costs exceeding $5 billion for 3 vessels. Trump had to waive the legal requirement that Coast Guard vessels must be U.S. built. America Turns to Finland for Icebreakers It Struggles to Build at Home American yards have no recent experience with large icebreakers, not one has been built in the United States in 50 years
